Last year, during my search for the Icterine warbler, I spotted a woodpecker in my garden. I thougt it was rather unusual to see them in my village. Also, some fellow villagers, didn't even beleive me...

So, I thougt about making picture of this bird, but, of course, I never saw it again.

But then, in the early spring of 2007, my luck changed!

In the corner of my eye, I saw something unusual. WoW, there it was! It turned out to be a female.

As can be seen clearly, the female doesn't have a red spot on the back of her head.

I witnessed her drilling / hammering in close-up. Did you know they close their eyes then??
